American Idol Star Star Slams Reality Show’s “Very Cruel” Audition Process After Quitting

Brian Dunkleman, a former American Idol host, recently shared details about the harsh audition process he witnessed before leaving the show after just one season. Brian was a co-host during the first season of the popular reality competition series in 2002, alongside Ryan Seacrest.

However, the comedian didn’t last very long and ended up quitting, leaving Ryan as the sole host ever since. American Idol‘s original judges were Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, and Simon Cowell. Simon was undeniably the cruelest of them all, which came as a shock when the reality show debuted in the United States.

Brian Dunkleman pulled back the curtain on the American Idol season 1 auditions and admitted the show was “very cruel” back then.

After recently appearing on the Still Here Hollywood podcast with Steve Kmetko, Brian revealed more about the cruel audition processes that contestants had to go through.

He admitted that after getting to know the kids and their parents while waiting in line, it became hard to watch those kids leave, one after another, bawling. “At one point…I just went and found a corner behind the curtain. I just started crying,” he stated. A comedian himself, Brian was aware of how nerve-racking the audition process could be and how challenging it was to be in the spotlight.

American Idol has evolved into a more uplifting reality show over the years. From American Idol seasons 1-9, Simon was a prominent figure as a judge.

Despite his ability to spot talent, his harshness had no limits. However, Brian revealed that Simon’s cruelty made American Idol a hit.

He stated, “And that’s kind of what made the show such a hit, was how mean [Simon] was. He was hated. He got death threats in England. He comes here, and everybody loves the guy.” Although this was entertaining for the audience, it was grueling for the contestants.

Although Ryan revealed the American Idol audition process has evolved, with contestants auditioning over Zoom first, this was a luxury not afforded to American Idol season 1 contestants. From Kelly Clarkson to Fantasia Barrino, these women had to endure critical comments from the judges to improve.

However, this was unnecessary. Their talent spoke for itself, and the judges being a little nicer wouldn’t have changed this. During American Idol season 22, the judges offered constructive criticism that motivated the contestants to improve rather than feel disheartened.

American Idol has been a successful show, discovering incredible talent over the years. However, despite its success, the environment for the contestants hasn’t always been ideal. American Idol felt more cutthroat in those early years when they had to face someone like Simon on a weekly basis, and they were never sure whether he would approve or not.

They have faced harsh criticism during the audition process and throughout the competition. Hopefully, future contestants won’t have to endure what others went through in the past.
