On July 12, 1976, Family Feud made its television debut, introducing a simple but addictive concept that has entertained generations of viewers ever since. Fifty years later, the iconic game show is still going strong, and it’s about to celebrate the milestone in a big way.

‘Family Feud’ Has Been a TV Staple for Five Decades

Created by Mark Goodson, Family Feud pits two families against one another as they try to guess the most popular answers to survey questions asked of 100 people.

Hosted by Richard Dawson during its original run, the series quickly became one of the highest-rated game shows on daytime television. Over the years, the show has featured several hosts, including Ray Combs, Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, John O’Hurley, and, most famously in recent years, Steve Harvey.

Harvey took over hosting duties in 2010, helping introduce Family Feud to an entirely new generation with his signature reactions, quick wit, and unforgettable responses to contestants’ often outrageous answers.

One of the Greatest Game Shows Ever

Five decades after its debut, Family Feud remains one of television’s most beloved game shows. IMDb ranked the series No. 4 on its list of the greatest game shows of all time, placing it alongside some of the most iconic competition shows ever created.

The show’s enduring popularity comes from a formula that has barely changed over the years. While the questions, contestants, and hosts have evolved, the family-friendly competition and unpredictable answers have continued to keep audiences coming back.

The 50th Anniversary Celebration Is Bringing Big Changes

The celebration isn’t stopping with the anniversary itself.

When the new season premieres on Sept. 28, Family Feud will officially kick off its 50th anniversary season with several special additions.

Among the biggest changes, the Fast Money jackpot will increase to $50,000 for 10 special episodes, while fan-favorite “legacy families” from past seasons will return to compete once again.

The anniversary festivities will also include special streaming content, a new edition of the official board game, a Family Feud Pocket game featuring Steve Harvey, themed programming across the show’s free streaming channels, and promotional partnerships with brands including Carvel and TGI Fridays.

The series also remains a ratings powerhouse, averaging 7.5 million daily viewers during the 2025–2026 season.

Half a century after families first stepped up to the podium, Family Feud continues to prove that a great idea — and a few hilarious survey answers—never goes out of style.
