Although Shifting Gears was just renewed for a third season, fans will have to wait until 2027 to see it. The ABC sitcom will air mid-season, despite Season 2 having high ratings.

The Tim Allen-led show was the number one comedy on the network last season, but that didn’t convince the showrunners to give it a full season run. Season 1 only had 10 episodes, airing from January to March. Season 2 only had 13 episodes, despite the season airing from October to February. Now, it appears Season 3 will get Season 1 treatment with a shortened season.

The series centers on car shop owner Matt Parker (Allen), who recently lost his wife but now lives with his daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), who, after going through a divorce, moved back in with her two children, Georgia (Barrett Margolis) and Carter (Maxwell Simkins).

At the end of Season 2, Riley was stuck in a love triangle as her ex-boyfriend, Andy (Jesse Williams), wanted to get back together with her at the same time as Gabe (Seann William Scott) said he wanted to be in a relationship with her. Who will she choose? Plus, Matt and Eve Drake (Jenna Elfman) got back together as he traveled to Barcelona on tour with her. Will they last?

Has Shifting Gears been renewed for Season 3?

Yes! Shifting Gears will return for a third season on ABC. The news was confirmed on April 30 when the cast posted an Instagram video with them all shouting “Three!”

“And… we’re back!” Allen said.

“Hop in, we’re driving to season 3 #ShiftingGearsABC is returning for a new season!” the Instagram post was captioned.

Who will star in Shifting Gears Season 3?

The series’ regular cast — Allen, Dennings, Scott, Margolis, Simkins, and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, who stars as Stitch — are all expected to return.

Elfman might not return, depending on how her and Matt’s relationship turns out. Season 2 also guest-starred Williams, Mookie Betts, Pamela Adlon, and Luke Macfarlane as Sam Parker. With Sam’s admission of quitting the Navy, he may have more of a guest role next season.

When will Season 3 of  Shifting Gears premiere?

Although an exact premiere date has not been announced, Season 3 will “debut in 2027,” according to a press release.

Where can you watch Shifting Gears?

In season, the sitcom would air on ABC on Wednesday nights.  We expect Season 3 to do the same. Past seasons can be streamed on Hulu.
