Reliving the Electrifying Legacy of the Champion Who Stole America’s Heart.
Every so often, a game show contestant takes off for reasons beyond winning. Maybe it’s their charm, their wit, or their viral moments. Such was the case with Washington Post opinion writer turned Jeopardy! fan-favorite Drew Goins. From his first appearance on the show to his standing as one of the most recognizable faces in recent memory, Drew Goins has cracked the code on how to become an iconic contestant.
Maybe it’s his good looks, perfect smile, and affable demeanor, but Drew Goins jumped off the screen in a way that no Jeopardy! contestant ever has. He was there to play the game and win some money. But he left with a legacy and a legion of fans, eager to see where he may pop up next. As we discuss his rise in game show stardom, it’s clear that Jeopardy! needs more individuals like him. But let’s face it, there will only ever be one Drew Goins.

Drew Goins Run on ‘Jeopardy!’ Was Iconic
Back in September 2024, after the excitable journalist made his first appearance on the show, he ended up having a viral moment after botching a question about Taylor Swift. Thankfully, Goins and his now-infamous turtleneck sweater was invited to play again in the Second Chance Tournament in January. He not only earned redemption in the eyes of the Swifties, he found success! He advanced to the finals, but sadly lost the next game, though he redeemed himself the next day, earning a spot in Champions Wildcard round. His return, in a slightly more modest sweater, allowed him victory again, netting him a spot in the Semi-Finals and then again to the Finals. But sadly, that’s where it ended. He did miss out on a chance to enter the Tournament of Champions, in which this time, it was all about botching a question about Celine Dion in the process.
There was something so enigmatic about Drew Goins, it was as if a ‘gay angel’ had willed his return to Jeopardy! Fate was on his side when he was called in as the first alternate for Abbott Elementary star Lisa Ann Walter. Lucky for Drew, he was victorious, sending him on to Semi-Finals. When he did take Lisa Ann Walter’s spot in the ToC (Tournament of Champions), one of his heat games featured massive bookworm and poor social strategist Drew Basile of Survivor 45 fame. And yes, Drew Goins has stated he would try Survivor. And that was before he faced off against his same-name rival. Sadly, this time it was the end of the road for Drew on Jeopardy! For now, at least. But when it comes to the zeitgeist of the show, Drew Goins is still a massive figure. And rightly so.
Drew Goins Knew How To Make Himself a ‘Jeopardy’ Star
Drew Goins knows how to make himself the star. Whether it’s his moment of the show or exploiting said moments via social media, Drew’s ability to know how to market himself has ensured his placement in the pantheon of Jeopardy! players. Maybe not for gameplay, but for personality. He went viral for his Lisa Ann Walter t-shirt, catching the attention of the actress. She has since surprised him at a taping of Inside Jeopardy Live on Tour just recently in DC.
While Drew has not necessarily shared that he’s hanging up his Jeopardy! sweaters, he has noted that in the new structure of the show, you can never say never. He revealed, “Some people have referred to this era as the era of forever Jeopardy!, where you never know if you’re going to be called back for something or another. I will say the flashcard app did not stay off my phone for long. It is back on my phone, and if it’s just that I’m learning for the sake of learning, excellent. If it’s learning that will perhaps one day serve me again on Jeopardy! in some capacity, even better.”

For one of Jeopardy’s non-dominating breakout stars, Drew Goins’ popularity continues to grow. And it’s because of the personality that comes through the screen. Many Jeopardy contestants come across as stone-cold gamers, eager to play without flaws. Drew Goins had the intent of success, but did it through fun. He ensured that even when he was faltering, he did it with a smile. It might be hard to name a Jeopardy! contestant who’s not a champion or a celebrity contestant. Drew Goins is defying those odds. Drew Goins may be the Jeopardy! ultimate survivor because it’s safe to say that whenever there is a redemption tournament, Drew will get the call. When Drew is on screen, the ratings rise. For a show with such a legacy, it takes someone special
to earn recognition beyond a long winning streak or a major blunder. Drew Goins is that person. Have a big smile, a giant brain, and the ability to have fun, and you too can be a Jeopardy! fan favorite. I’d be honored to be the president of the unofficial Drew Goins fan club.
Jeopardy! is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
