The Neighborhood is ending after eight seasons
Cedric the Entertainer has said finances were behind the decision not to continue the show
A spinoff starring Tracy Morgan premiered in 2025 but has not yet been renewed for a second season
After eight years on air, fans are saying goodbye to The Neighborhood.
The hit CBS comedy followed Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield), a well-meaning Midwesterner who moves his White family into a predominantly Black neighborhood in Los Angeles, where not everyone — including his neighbor Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer) — appreciates his overly friendly personality.
Cedric opened up about the show’s ability to “tap into the humor of the commonality of people” in an October 2025 interview with The Knockturnal.
“We started off with a premise that was, especially at that time, this idea of gentrification that our Black neighborhoods were starting to be taken back over by people that are moving in, raising the housing prices, bringing in the greater goods and services, once the White families move in,” he explained.
The Neighborhood tackled issues of race and class throughout its eight-season run, which concludes on May 11.
So, why is The Neighborhood ending? Here’s everything to know about the decision to conclude the series and what the cast has said in response.

In March 2025, CBS announced that The Neighborhood had been renewed for an eighth and final season.
President of CBS Entertainment Amy Reisenbach said in a statement to Variety that “the show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.”
Cedric shared more insight into why the series was ending, telling The Breakfast Club in April 2026 that rising production costs and salary demands were reportedly the main reasons.
“After eight seasons, everybody needed raises and that’s when you knew, ‘Alright this show is getting ready to be done,’ ” he explained, noting that CBS was willing to pay him more.
The actor added, “You want everybody to eat with you … I’m not getting ready to be that guy where I’m just the only one eating.”
PEOPLE reached out to the network for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
What has Cedric the Entertainer said about The Neighborhood ending?
Though the comedian told The Breakfast Club that he felt like he could have told stories on The Neighborhood “forever,” he also admitted that he was eager to stretch his creative muscles beyond sitcoms.
“I wanted to be able to kind of really place myself in a space where people would want to cast me in serious roles and see me outside of myself,” he told The Knockturnal in October 2025, mentioning his Broadway return in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.
Beth Behrs, who played Gemma Johnson, struck a more emotional note on Instagram in February 2026 after filming wrapped, writing that playing her character “through marriage, global pandemics, 2 strikes, motherhood and all the other bits of life” had been “an absolute gift.”
Will there be a spinoff of The Neighborhood?

Though two Neighborhood spinoffs were reportedly in the works, only one has made it to the small screen.
Crutch — starring Tracy Morgan as Calvin’s cousin, a Harlem shop owner whose life shifts when his two kids move back home — premiered on Paramount+ in November 2025, after news that a spinoff centered on Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney) and Marty Butler (Marcel Spears) had been scrapped.
The latter would have centered on Malcolm and Marty as they moved out of their parents’ homes to start the next chapter of their lives in Venice Beach.
“We were excited about doing this,” Cedric told TVLine in April 2025. “We created the idea, and we intentionally tried to use an episode of The Neighborhood that we had in order to shoot it.”
He continued, “We thought we did a great job, but ultimately there wasn’t enough room in the budget for what we had.”
Crutch has not yet been renewed for a second season.
Where can I watch The Neighborhood?
All eight seasons of The Neighborhood are available to stream on Paramount+.
