Tim Allen Reunites With Galaxy Quest Star for New Comedy Pilot

Tim Allen is heading back into the world of sitcoms with his next big project. He’s attached to an ABC comedy series pilot that’s in the works, and the latest casting will reunite the actor with a Galaxy Quest star.

The cast of Galaxy Quest prepare for a mission in Galaxy Quest.

Per Variety, another casting has been revealed for the pilot, titled Shifting Gears. Actor Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, who previously co-starred with Allen in the sci-fi comedy movie Galaxy Quest, has been cast as Ed, a former marine and mechanic who works at a shop owned by Allen’s character. Mitchell’s character is expected to be featured as a series regular if ABC orders the pilot to series. It has also been reported that the pilot will also star Kat Dennings (WandaVision) and Froy Gutierrez (Hocus Pocus 2), respectively as the daughter and son of Allen’s character.

“Matt (Allen) is the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,” the official logline for Shifting Gears reads. Gutierrez’s Nick is said to be a “game coder but put his life on hold to come home and help his father at the shop.” Also revealed is the plans to include another character, Frankie, with Mitchell’s Ed serving as Frankie’s “work husband.” That character has not yet been cast.

Mitchell is also known for appearing in movies like House PartySgt. Bilko, and Home Fries. He’s also appeared in TV shows like Ed and Veronica’s Closet, more recently having recurring roles in Fear the Walking Dead and NCIS: New Orleans.

Tim Allen confirms his interest in bringing back Home Improvement and reveals the ideas he has for the potential revival.

It’s not out of the question for Allen and Mitchell to also reunite for a Galaxy Quest sequel. There have been rumors for years about the 1999 movie getting a follow-up film, though such a sequel has yet to materialize. Actor Sam Rockwell recently addressed the chatter about a new Galaxy Quest project, and he stated how the surviving cast members would be up for coming back for a new story, whether that’s for a new film or even a limited series.

“It was a really lucky thing, that film,” Rockwell said, per GQ. “If there was a sequel to Galaxy Quest, we would be on it. We talked about it, maybe like a limited series. Simon Pegg talked about helping with it, actually.”

Galaxy Quest is currently streaming for Showtime on Paramount+ subscribers.
