A ‘Price Is Right’ Contestant Broke the Game — Then Blames Drew Carey

In the unpredictable world of game shows, anything that can go wrong usually does—and The Price Is Right is no exception. From wardrobe malfunctions to on-stage car crashes, Murphy’s Law is practically a featured contestant. But on the March 2025 episode, one Hawaii contestant’s blunder wasn’t just bad luck—it sparked a viral moment when she pinned the blame squarely on host Drew Carey.
Drew Carey Gets Blamed for Switcheroo Boo-Boo
Among the Price Is Right contenders called down to Contestant’s Row was Yanira, and she placed the winning bet on a pair of 128 GB smartphones, coming closest with a bid of $1,000 to the retail price of $1,398. She took her place beside Carey on stage, where it was revealed she would be playing Switcheroo, a game introduced in October 1976.
The object of the game is to place five numbered blocks on the board to match the retail price of a car and four other prizes, each missing one digit. If the first guess isn’t correct, the contestant is allowed to “switcheroo” the numbers in a second effort at guessing the correct prices, within 30 seconds.
The list of prizes Yanira had to price included a bright red car, a refillable fire extinguisher, a heavy-duty water-resistant lock box, a dry-erase board with an easel and marker, and a three-tiered water fountain. Easy-peasy. The timer started, and Yanira entered the numbers on time—but then began second-guessing her choices and turned to the audience for help.
She turned back to the board and touched the block that was in the fire extinguisher row, and it fell out. As she went to move it back, she uttered, “I broke it.” Carey himself checked it out, saying, “No, you didn’t. Oh yeah, you did.” But as he touched the block, it tumbled to the floor, and as Yanira picked up the number block, she berated the host, saying, “You broke it more!”
No Consolation Prize for Yanira on ‘The Price Is Right’

If you’re trying to win big prizes on a game show, blaming the host for a misstep probably isn’t the smartest move—that’s what social media is for. But Carey took it in stride, chuckling along with the audience and propping up the block as best he could, saying, “We’ll pretend that’s where it goes.” With the first round crisis averted, it was revealed that only two of the five numbers were in the correct place, so Yanira prepared herself for the “switcheroo” second round. There were no additional number block disasters—aside from the fact that not a single one ended up in the correct place. After switching them around, Yanira’s guess of $21,779 was just $60 off the actual car price of $21,719. No correct guesses, no prize. Adding insult to injury, spinning a 60 on the Showcase Showdown wheel wasn’t enough to make it to the Showcase Round.
While Yanira’s disastrous turn on The Price is Right is likely to live on in infamy, the usual assortment of social media assassins didn’t rip her to shreds, but rather afforded Yanira some grace. One YouTube user said, “These games are hard,” while many others simply added, “Ouch.” However, it’s unlikely that it gives Yanira any degree of solace from her embarrassing breakdown on national TV. But at least she’s got a nice pair of 128 GB smartphones she could sell off, if she’s so inclined, and buy her own fire extinguisher, lock box, and dry-erase board easel and marker. As for the three-tiered water fountain? If you’re reading this, Yanira, here’s a helpful tip: a three-tiered chocolate fountain makes everything better. Just don’t let Drew Carey put it together for you.
The Price Is Right is on weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/PT on CBS.
