Kelly Clarkson Unpacks The Voice’s Game‑Changing Update: “That’s Never Happened”
The Voice Coaches reveal that Battle of Champions‘ new voting system will “change everything.”
The Voice is getting a major remix for Battle of Champions, promising plenty of twists and turns for Coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine.
Season 29 of The Voice, Battle of Champions, will be more intense than ever before as these red chair icons build winner-worthy teams. But with a new voting system in place this season, the Coaches will be tasked with getting the studio audience to fall in love with their frontrunners. For the first time ever, a new voting block comprised of super fans and past Artists will have the opportunity to get in on the fun firsthand, experiencing the competition as part of the in-studio audience. They will vote for their favorites in real time during the Semi-Finals and Finale, ultimately determining which finalist will be crowned the champion of The Voice. The new voting system is quite the shake-up for the Season 29 Coaches and has prompted the red chair powerhouses to get even more competitive.
NBC Insider connected with the Season 29 Coaches of The Voice, and they had plenty to say about the “exciting” new voting format.

During a press junket with Levine, Clarkson, and Legend ahead of Season 29’s premiere, it was clear that the entire Coaches panel is thrilled to see how the new voting system will play out in real-time.
“The voting is now in-house. This is the first season that the voting is in-house. That’s never happened, which is exciting,” Clarkson said, adding that the Artists getting live feedback from the crowd is a “cool” new aspect of Season 29. “It’s different on TV than when you’re in the room… the energy in the room is different, it sounds different, it’s a different thing… So I’m excited about that, I’m also nervous about that.”
Legend echoed the enthusiasm about the impact of live performances, adding, “We all know as artists and singers, it doesn’t sound as quite as good — it never has, it never will — when you’re in a room. Nothing replaces that.”
There are “no weak links” on The Voice Season 29

Legend teases that there are “no weak links” among the Season 29 lineup of Artists and Coaches; everyone is bringing their A-game to the Battle of Champions. “Everybody’s super good, everybody’s really good at coaching, good at pitching, good at convincing people to come to their team,” Legend said. “Like every aspect of the show, the level of competition is elevated.”
While thinking about their selected teams and envisioning who might go farthest in the competition, Clarkson admitted that their opinion on who might win the season didn’t carry much weight due to Season 29’s “tricky” voting system.
“What’s funny, though, is we don’t know. Because this is a tricky season,” Clarkson said while reminding her red chair companions of the new in-house voting. “That, I think, is going to change everything.”
“We’ve never seen it before,” Legend said, adding that the former Voice Artists will also play a major role in swaying the tides of public favor. “It’ll be like a little scientific experiment for figuring out how this goes.”
