Ocala veterans who adopted baby left at fire station competing for $12 million on NBC game show

An Ocala firefighter and his wife, who adopted the first child left in a Safe Haven Baby Box in Marion County almost exactly three years ago, were selected to compete for up to $12 million on an NBC game show next week.

Vincent Alexander, a firefighter and paramedic with Ocala Fire Rescue, and his wife, Katy, an occupational therapist, are set to appear in a new episode of “The Wall” on NBC on Monday, January 12 at 9 p.m. EST. Both Navy veterans who met during deployment, the Alexanders will compete for a cash prize that could reach up to $12 million.

On January 1 2023, Vincent responded to an alarm at his fire station’s Safe Haven Baby Box, which is a device that allows parents to safely and anonymously surrender newborns. Inside the box, he discovered a baby girl who was just 12 hours old.

The Alexanders, who had struggled for years to start a family, felt an immediate connection to the infant and eventually adopted her. The child, Zoey, celebrated her third birthday last week.

Hosted by Chris Hardwick and executive produced by LeBron James, “The Wall” combines trivia with a game of chance similar to Plinko, another game made popular by “The Price is Right.”

During “The Wall,” teammates answer questions to release green balls that fall down a four-story wall into high-value slots, adding to their potential winnings. However, incorrect answers release red balls that deduct money from the total.

The game tests trust as much as knowledge, as one player is kept in soundproof isolation to answer questions while the other places bets on the wall, unaware of how much money they have actually won or lost until the final reveal.

The Alexanders are the second Ocala residents to be featured on a major network game show in recent months.

Last fall, Ocala resident Jackie Graves competed on the FOX game show “99 to Beat,” a competition that pitted 100 contestants against one another in a series of physical and mental challenges. Graves survived multiple rounds before being eliminated in 72nd place during a rubber band challenge.
