Patricia Richardson didn’t hold back when she was asked about the possibility of a Home Improvement reunion or reboot series. This followed series star Tim Allen’s most recent attempt at suggesting the cast was all-in on a return. While Richardson’s relationship with Allen soured after she decided to leave Home Improvement, fans were shocked at her straight-up calling him “a liar” regarding his reunion comments. Not only that, but she claimed the rest of the wealthy cast said the same thing.

What Patricia Richardson Said About Tim Allen’s Home Improvement Reboot Series

Perhaps there was a time when a Home Improvement sequel series would have been possible. But that time is not now. For one, the actor who played the show’s eldest son, Brad, Zachery Ty Bryan, was charged with a felony and has a shocking arrest history. Then there’s Home Improvement’s other two young leads, Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy) and Taran Noah Smith (Mark), both of whom have purposefully vanished from Hollywood, leaving their child star acting careers behind in the dust. Then there’s Earl Hindman, who played Wilson, who died in 2003. All of these key points were brought up by Patricia Richardson (Jill Taylor) during her April 2024 comments on the “Back to the Best” podcast.

Home Improvement ran from 1991 until 1999

Richardson was asked about the rumors that Tim Allen was sprinkling around Hollywood and the press. Mainly there was going to be a Home Improvement reboot, perhaps called Home Re-Improvement. Allen suggested this back in November 2023, according to Entertainment Weekly. Although this wasn’t the first time Tim Allen claimed Home Improvement would return. But Allen’s beloved on-screen wife dispelled the rumors pretty succinctly. While doing so, Richardson called Allen “a lair”.

“I would hear on Twitter or whatever that he was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about how everyone was on board to do a Home Improvement reunion,” Patricia Richardson said during her interview with “Back to the Best”.

She then continued by saying the following:

“But [Tim Allen] never asked me, and he never asked Jonathan [Taylor Thomas]. I called Jonathan one day and I said, ‘Has he asked you about this?’ And he went, ‘No. Why is he going around telling everyone that we’re on board when he hasn’t talked to you or me?’ I think that’s weird. He was lying to people and telling them that I was on board and I didn’t know anything about it.”

It’s true that Allen was claiming that he had spoken to the cast and there was an interest among them. However, Allen did not specify which cast members he had or hadn’t spoken to. Therefore, it’s hard to know who he means. However, he did suggest that Richard Karn (Al) could be interested. But for Richardson’s part, as well as Jonathan Taylor Thomas’, Allen did not approach them.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas wasn’t completely direct on his reason to leave Tim Allen and Home Improvement behind.

Patricia Richardson also claimed that she would not want to return to her Home Improvement role. Not just because she was done with it, but because of the state of the cast.

“I would not want to. I mean, Zach [Ty Bryan] is now a felon… Taran [Noah Smith] hasn’t acted since he left the show… Jonathan is not really interested in acting… and we don’t have Wilson. So if we did it without Earl [Hindman], and also we have just two kids — probably, if that — it’s not going to be the (same) show at all.”

What Did Tim Allen Say About A Home Improvement Reboot?

Tim Allen has floated the possibility of a Home Improvement reboot series numerous times before. This includes a 2020 interview he did with TVLine. In which, Allen said the following:

“I always think about it, because I still talk to everybody involved. The question I have is, ‘Is it still relevant? Is Tim Taylor relevant…”

Jonathan Taylor Thomas decided to leave the successful sitcom Home Improvement for a very interesting reason.

Allen went on to say, “I like the idea of doing it as a one-off, like a one-hour movie. I like the idea of finding out where the boys are now, and where… Tool Time would be in today’s world.”

Tim Allen mentioned a possible Home Improvement sequel series in 2020 as well. During an interview with Messenger, he said…

“I see Richard Karn a lot. And I talk to the boys [Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith] and I’m there as one of their friends. We keep talking about [a spinoff].”

Of course, according to Patricia Richardson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas denies the fact that Allen has spoken to him about a reboot. Nevertheless, Tim Allen stated that he had spoken to them about the idea.

Tim Allen continued by saying:

“It’s funny, one of the conversations we’ve had recently is how weird it would be if Home Improvement would be about the kids’ kids. Like if all of them had children, and I’m a grandparent. Home Re-Improvement or something like that. It’s come up.”
