ABC Issued A Statement Claiming Last Man Standing Was Not Canceled Because Of Tim Allen’s Political Views

In May of 2017, ABC announced the cancelation of Last Man Standing, a decision that was met with a lot of criticism. During its cancelation in season six, the show was the second-most-watched on the entire network. Ratings remained steady, but that wasn’t enough to keep the show afloat.

Fans even launched a petition to keep ABC from canceling Tim Allen’s series.

“‘Last Man Standing’ stands out in the sea of network television sitcoms. It is a show that appeals to a broad swath of Americans who find very few shows that extol the virtues with which they can identify; namely conservative values,” the petition reads. “The show is about more than politics though, it is about family. In fact, politics is only a secondary part of the show, but one in which many Americans can readily identify.”

Still, that wasn’t enough for ABC, and fans believe Tim Allen’s support of Donald Trump caused the show’s downfall.

ABC issued a statement of their own, claiming that Last Man Standing was not canceled because of the actor’s politics. ABC President Channing Dungey commented, ”(‘Last Man Standing’) was a challenging one for me because it was a steady performer in the ratings,” Dungey said. “Once we made the decision to not continue with comedies on Friday, that was where we landed.”

He continues, “There’s a lot of news, and I think that people are definitely looking to television as a place they want to feel, they want to laugh, they want to cry … the mood of the country has told us that television is a little bit of an escape,” Dungey said. “What people want to do now is connect and experience and to feel … that did frame a lot of our development thinking this season.”

Patricia Richardson’s stint on Home Improvement came to an end on rocky terms, but she salvaged relationships.

Tim Allen Admitted Saying Goodbye To The Show Was Not Easy

FOX ended up coming in for the save, allowing three extra seasons of the sitcom. Still, ending the sitcom after nine seasons was very difficult for Allen.

He said, “To be very honest, I have had problems letting go of this one. It’s just been three or four weeks and I’m literally just feeling better. Never have I enjoyed, outside of Home Improvement and maybe moments of Galaxy Quest, one of these jobs,” he said. “This crew, from the guy at the gate to Radford inside to people we ate with, I loved every second of this experience.”

Donald Trump wasn’t pleased after David Letterman brought up a valid point about his ties on the Late Show.

Nonetheless, Allen was grateful for the experience, issuing a message on Twitter to his fans.

“So hard to express how cool it’s been to be a part of this near decade long creation,” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, October 15, following the announcement. “Our final year…damn. You are going to love what we are planning! Shooting as I type.”

Fans praised Tim Allen for being honest about attending Donald Trump’s inauguration during his interview with Jimmy Kimmel. Although his words might’ve done more harm than good, he spoke freely about the topic on ABC.

He said, “You’ve gotta be real careful around here,” he said on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “You get beat up if don’t believe what everybody believes.” Allen added, “This is like ’30s Germany. I don’t know what happened. If you’re not part of the group, ‘you know what we believe is right,’ I go, ‘Well, I might have a problem with that.’”

He adds, “What I find odd in Hollywood is that they didn’t like Trump because he was a bully,” he told Megyn Kelly on Fox News. “But if you had any kind of inkling that you were for Trump, you got bullied for doing that. And it gets a little bit hypocritical to me.”
