‘Wheel of Fortune’ Fans Think This Part of the Show Is ‘Unnecessary’.

There’s no toss-up about it here. Wheel of Fortune fans think a certain aspect of the game show is unnecessary.

“Extra Toss-Ups Are Unnecessary,” a Reddit user said. “I have been a fan of Wheel of Fortune all of my life and used to play the old video games. However, I believe that the toss-ups have been unnecessarily overused in the last 5-6 years.”

The toss-ups are aspects of the beginning and the end of the game, where the contestants use their buzzers to ring in. Instead of calling out letters, letters populate on the board one at a time. The first person to ring in wins the money.

At the beginning of the game are two toss-ups. The first one usually determines who host Ryan Seacrest interviews first. The second then determines who will spin first.

Then, at the end of the game, there is the Triple Toss-up. It’s three toss-ups for $2,000 each, but if one contestant solves all three, they win $10,000. It can be a game-changer for a lot of contestants. The person who solves the final one gets to spin the wheel for the last puzzle.

The toss-ups were introduced in Season 18, but only had the first two at the beginning, according to Fandom. Then, in Season 19, three toss-ups were added, but they were in between the interviews and Round One. It wasn’t until Season 37 that the Triple Toss-ups were moved to the end of the game.

“My opinion is it should go back to the 2000-01 format where there was only one at the top and one near the end, and when it was just a check on who controlled the round and not as the main game itself. I would even go as far as to say, instead of a toss-up before round 4, just allow whoever won the initial toss-up to play the game. To balance out the less gimme money, the one and only toss-up should be valued at $5,000,” the original poster asked before opening up the discussion.

“Agree. Two more toss-ups means less wheel spinning,” a fan agreed.

“Regardless, I hate that toss-ups don’t follow the show every letter pattern. If there are two Ns, show them both. I hate toss-ups and ship them on my DVR. 5 toss-ups is way too many,” another said.

“I would prefer the 2001-2019 format, but I wouldn’t mind the 2000-01, but I also hate the triple toss-ups,” a fan said. This was the format that came before the Triple Toss-ups.

However, some fans don’t mind the toss-up. “I love the Triple Toss-ups,” a fan said.

“I like how there are fewer people ending the game with $0 since they added the triple toss-up. It’s also purely skill-based, which feels more fair,” one last fan said.
