Jennifer Hudson Breaks Silence on Returning to “The Voice” Season 29 to Support Kelly Clarkson

The red chairs are turning once again for Season 29 of NBC’s The Voice, but fans noticed a familiar, powerhouse face filling in during the recent Battle Round rehearsals.

Jennifer Hudson, the EGOT winner and former coach, has officially spoken out about her return to the show, clarifying her role and addressing rumors that she might be replacing Kelly Clarkson.

Stepping in During a Difficult Time

The speculation began when reports surfaced that Kelly Clarkson would be absent from several key filming sessions. It has since been confirmed that Kelly took a brief leave of absence to be with her children following the tragic passing of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, in August 2025 (during the season’s early production).

In a heartwarming display of “American Idol” alumni sisterhood, Jennifer Hudson stepped up to mentor Team Kelly. Hudson, who previously coached in Seasons 13 and 15, recently shared her thoughts on the experience:

“Family comes first, always,” Hudson remarked during a press segment. “Kelly is my girl, and when she needed someone to look after her team, there was no question. It wasn’t about ‘replacing’ anyone—it was about being there for a friend.”

Is the Change Permanent?

Despite the “replacement” rumors swirling on social media, the transition is temporary. Kelly Clarkson remains an official coach for Season 29, alongside Adam Levine and John Legend.

While Jennifer handled the “intel” and rehearsal notes for the Battle Rounds, Kelly returned to her big red chair for the actual performances. Kelly expressed her deep gratitude on the show, stating:

“I really hated that I couldn’t be there, but JHud left these amazing notes. She’s a big fan of my artists, and her insight was invaluable.”

What to Expect from “The Voice” Season 29

Subtitled Battle of Champions, Season 29 features a unique three-coach panel—all of whom have won previous seasons. With Jennifer Hudson back in the mix as a high-profile advisor, the stakes for the contestants have never been higher.
