ABC’s High-Stakes Teaser for ‘American Idol’ Season 24 Reveals More Than Just Talent
“Idol University” Opens Its Doors: ABC Teases American Idol Season 24 with Nostalgia and Bloopers
As American Idol prepares for its landmark 24th season (and its ninth on ABC), the network has launched a new marketing campaign titled “Idol University.” This fictional institution serves as a backdrop for the latest promos, which lean heavily into the show’s 20-plus-year history while introducing the new judging panel of Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.

Inside “Idol-U”
The “Idol University” promo, released in late December 2025, features host Ryan Seacrest—dressed in a royal blue letterman’s jacket—welcoming the judges to the “historic halls” of the fictional campus. The university is a living museum of Idol nostalgia, showcasing:
The Hall of Fame: Framed photos of past legends like Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and recent winner Jamal Roberts.
The Archives: Platinum records, trophies, and a gallery of Ryan Seacrest’s various hairstyles throughout the decades.
The Mission: Carrie Underwood, returning for her second season as a judge, summarizes the theme: “This year, we’re majoring in music as we help launch your dreams”.
Clay Aiken’s Surprise Cameo
One of the most talked-about moments in the teasers is a guest appearance by season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken. In the promo, the judges encounter a “wax figure” of Aiken on a pedestal labeled “Class of 2003”. The statue suddenly comes to life, winking and startling the panel.
The bit ends with a playful power struggle between Aiken and Seacrest. When Aiken asks the signature question, “Who will be the next American Idol?”, Seacrest immediately interjects, “Um, that’s my line!”.

The Blooper Reel
To further build anticipation, ABC released a blooper reel on January 14, 2026, highlighting the chemistry between the returning trio. Highlights include:
Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie attempting a “ridiculous” high-five that Underwood quickly labels as “weird”.
Luke Bryan repeatedly dropping expletives after flubbing his lines, much to the amusement of the crew.
Clay Aiken poking fun at his long absence from the series, joking, “Finally an answer to the question of ‘Where the hell has Clay Aiken been for the last 15 years?'”.
What’s Ahead for Season 24
Season 24 is set to premiere on Monday, January 26, 2026—an earlier start than previous years. In a major change to the format, Hollywood Week has been moved from Los Angeles to Nashville, Tennessee, the home of country music, where a portion of the auditions were filmed at Belmont University.
Fans can watch the two-hour season premiere on ABC at 8/7c or stream it the next day on Hulu.
