How The Triple Turn Competition Works on The Voice Season 29

In every past season of The Voice, Artists sang at the Blind Auditions to try and get at least one chair turn from the four Coaches, and when more than one Coach turns around, they battle one another in their pitches to get that singer on their team. Some of the especially impressive Artists got chair turns from three Coaches, and sometimes, there was the coveted 4-Chair turn, meaning that all four Coaches wanted that Artist on their team.

Over the years, 4-Chair turns have been earned by all kinds of singers, including a yodeler! In Season 24, for instance, Ruby Leigh performed Patsy Montana’s “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” setting off a fierce competition between the Coaches. Even Chrissy Teigen set off a four-way competition. It became something of a running competition between the Coaches to see who could “win” the most 4-Chair Turns, successfully convincing those Artists to join their team.

But for Season 29, The Voice: Battle of Champions, things are a little different. To start, there are only three Coaches (and therefore three chairs): best-selling belter Kelly Clarkson, OG Coach Adam Levine and EGOT winner John Legend. And beating one another out when Triple Chair Turns happen isn’t just a matter of pride; it has strategic value.

Season 29 of The Voice has introduced an all-new element to the mix — the Triple Turn Competition. Read on for everything you need to know about the new rule you’ll see at play during the Blind Auditions.

For the first time ever, The Voice has added a Triple Turn Competition. During the Blind Auditions, the Coach with the most Artists on their team who received 3-Chair Turns will earn a special advantage to use later in the competition — the Super Steal.

“We have a little thing going on right now, a little Coach thing going on,” Clarkson said in a promo clip. “Whoever gets the most Triple Chair Turns gets a Super Steal. I love that.”

When The Voice Host Carson Daly asked who the Coaches think will win the most Triple Chair Turns this season, they all agreed it’ll be a close race. “I feel like any of could win that,” Legend said, while Clarkson added, “That’s what I think is going to be interesting. It really just depends on what Artists are coming out and who they’re, you know, inspired by and want to work with.”

In a sneak peek at Season 29, The Voice revealed that Alexia Jayy became the first Artist of this season to score a 3-Chair Turn this season with her performance of Carole King’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” And you can already sense the competition will be fierce among the Coaches to win her choice.

What’s a Super Steal on The Voice?

In the Battles, the round after the Blind Auditions, teammates go head-to-head in competitive duets, after which their Coach chooses one Artist to keep, releasing the other. That released Artist can then be “stolen” by another Coach (though Coaches have a limited number of Steals). If more than one Coach wants to steal that Artist, the Artist gets to pick their new Coach!

With the Super Steal, though, the Coach who uses it gets the Artist on their team, no matter what. That advantage could guarantee the winning Coach the line-up of their dreams!

Of course, it’s not just getting all the best Artists onto their team that gives a Coach a leg up. Song selection can make or break a performance. Just ask Coach Niall Horan, who won Season 28 with Artist Aiden Ross.

“It’s important that the people at home, everybody that’s watching the show, knows the songs,” Horan explained to NBC Insider in a 2025 interview. “That’s a big one, and they’re not like deep cuts at this point. I don’t think we need deep cuts, I think we need songs that everyone knows.”

“I never want to like throw some weird song in, and make them have to overthink, you don’t want that,” he added. “You want people to know the songs, and you want them to feel super comfortable… The notes are going to hit, it all needs to just kind of slot in.”

Fellow Season 28 Coach Reba McEntire agreed with that strategy. “You want [the Artists] to go, ‘Oh, I love that song!’ And if they’re familiar with it, then they don’t have that much to cram and learn,” she told NBC Insider. “It’s the best when you say, ‘Do you know this song?’ ‘Oh man, I’ve played it a million times. I love it!'”

All of the format updates to The Voice Season 29 will certainly shake things up. Watch The Voice: Battle of Champions Monday nights at 9/8c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
