The Voice is back for Season 29 — and for the first time ever, three former champions are squaring off in a “Battle of Champions.” Four-time winner Kelly Clarkson returns to the big red chair for the first time since Season 23, while three-time champ Adam Levine and Season 16 winner John Legend reunite after last coaching together on Season 27. The trio has only shared the panel once before — Season 16, which marked Legend’s debut and his lone victory. And while she’s not officially part of the competition, Reba McEntire made her presence felt, phoning in during the premiere to endorse a coach as country hopefuls took the stage.
If Kelly or Adam hopes to outmaneuver John this season, they’ll have to do it under new rules. During the Blind Auditions, each coach will build a team of 10 artists — but there’s no “Block.” Instead, the coach who lands the most three-chair turns earns a new “Super Steal,” allowing them to override another coach’s steal during the Battles. Comedian Druski and NBA legend Derek Fisher track the Triple Turn leaderboard, while Carson Daly returns as host.
Read on for our The Voice 29 recap of “The Blind Auditions Season Premiere” performances which aired Monday, Feb. 23 at 8 pm ET/PT on NBC.

Adam’s comments: “The song you sang, Aretha Franklin, written by Carole King. Two very different people came together to create one of the best moments in music history because they were different… maybe the way for you to go all the way here is to do it with somebody that maybe not everybody would expect… you have one of the best voices I’ve ever heard on this show ever.”
Kelly’s comments: “It’s such a big, bold statement … I could hear you wailing on a country song honestly.”
