Is Shifting Gears on Tonight? Here’s When New Season 2 Episodes Will Return to TV

The laughs and sweet moments are just getting started on Shifting Gears.

Season 2 of the hit show premiered on. Oct. 1, 2025, and typically airs every Wednesday, but the series also has planned breaks. While the first six episodes aired weekly, there was no new episode on Nov. 12, and there is also no new episode tonight, Nov. 19.

Although Shifting Gears season 2 is taking a brief hiatus, it will return for its seventh episode, titled “License,” on Dec. 3. Then, on Dec. 10, there will be a special holiday episode called “Nutcracker.”

The ABC sitcom follows Matt Parker (Tim Allen), a widower grieving the loss of his wife while running his auto restoration shop. While figuring out how to navigate his new normal, his life gets slightly more complicated when his estranged daughter, Riley Parker (Kat Dennings), reunites with him after her divorce and moves in with her son, Carter (Maxwell Simkins), and daughter, Georgia (Barrett Margolis).

The hit show also stars Daryl Mitchell as Stitch, Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Jenna Elfman as Eve Drake, Cynthia Quiles as Frankie and Lucas Neff as Jimmy. In addition to returning cast members, Jesse Williams also joined the cast as Andy, a “single dad who frequents Riley’s (Dennings) coffee cart and has eyes for Riley too.” While a third season has not yet been confirmed, fans can still catch a few more season 2 episodes.

Is Shifting Gears on tonight?

The first six episodes of Shifting Gears aired every Wednesday from Oct. 1 to Nov. 5. However, there was no new episode on Nov. 12, and there is no new episode of Shifting Gears tonight, Nov. 19, according to ABC.

There also won’t be a new episode on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

When is Shifting Gears season 2 returning with new episodes?

Shifting Gears took a mid-season break after the sixth episode aired on Nov. 5. New episodes will resume on Dec. 3 with the release of the seventh episode, “License.”

“When he finds out Carter’s getting driving lessons, Matt’s plan to prove he’s the better teacher hits a snag when he learns his license is expired,” the episode’s description reads. “Meanwhile, Riley’s two worlds collide as she struggles to keep both her business and family afloat.”

In addition to the seventh episode, the series has also confirmed that a holiday special, “Nutcracker,” will be released on Dec. 10 before it takes another break.

Similar to other shows on ABC, Shifting Gears will pause airing new episodes during the holiday season. The network confirmed that the series will return to its normal schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

Other ABC series returning that same week in January 2026 include High Potential, Abbott Elementary, Shark Tank, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy and America’s Funniest Home Videos, among others.

How many episodes are left in Shifting Gears season 2?

As of September 2025, there are 13 episodes slated for season 2 of Shifting Gears. The live-audience, multi-camera sitcom was initially renewed for just 10 episodes, but ABC increased the amount by three in September, Deadline reported at the time.

The first season consisted of 10 episodes, but both seasons are slightly short of a full sitcom order, which has historically been around 18 episodes.

Prior to the mid-season break, Allen explained that the rest of Shifting Gears season 2 will continue to explore themes of grief in a light-hearted way.

“I find it interesting people who grieve over something but can get on with their lives and that’s what this is about,” Allen said on The View in September. “Kat Dennings comes back to the house and the grieving issue with this show has turned into this wonderful thing.”

Shifting Gears streams Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. For those who missed watching the latest episode live, they can stream it on Hulu the next day.
