Patricia Richardson Reveals $1M Pay Gap With Tim Allen Led to ‘Home Improvement’ Ending
In a candid reflection on one of television’s most iconic sitcoms, actress Patricia Richardson has revealed that a significant pay disparity between her and co-star Tim Allen played a pivotal role in ending Home Improvement. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times for the 25th anniversary of the show’s finale, Richardson shared that she used the network’s proposed salary gap as leverage to walk away from the series.

At the time, ABC was negotiating contracts for a potential ninth season. Tim Allen, who played the show’s lead character Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, was reportedly offered $2 million per episode. In contrast, Richardson—who portrayed Jill Taylor, Tim’s wife and the show’s emotional anchor—was offered half that amount: $1 million per episode.
Richardson said the offer felt like a betrayal of the show’s original promise. “When I took the job, they said it wasn’t meant to be the Tim Allen show. It was meant to be our show,” she explained. With longtime directors having left and the creative energy shifting, Richardson felt the show had run its course. “I told everybody, ‘There’s not enough money in the world to get me to do a ninth year,’” she said.
Rather than accept the pay gap, Richardson used it as a final push to end the series. She and Allen had already discussed the possibility of wrapping things up, and the unequal offer solidified her decision. “This show is over. It needs to end,” she told her team.
Home Improvement aired from 1991 to 1999 and was one of ABC’s highest-rated sitcoms during its run. Richardson’s portrayal of Jill Taylor was widely praised for bringing depth and realism to the role of a sitcom mom, balancing humor with heartfelt moments.
Her decision to walk away from the show over pay inequality has since been viewed as a bold stand for fairness in Hollywood.

The revelation has reignited conversations about gender pay gaps in the entertainment industry, especially in long-running series where female leads often receive less compensation than their male counterparts. Richardson’s story adds a powerful chapter to the ongoing dialogue about equity, respect, and the value of shared creative contributions.
