Shifting Gears Season 3’s Fate Revealed in New ABC Report 2 Months After Last Episode.

The ABC sitcom Shifting Gears has been on the bubble at the network since the second season concluded back in February. While a renewal for Season 3 has not yet been officially announced, the latest update on the show’s fate all but confirms the sitcom’s return.

As reported by Deadline, ABC is planning to renew all of its current scripted shows. This would include Shifting Gears, which is still the only returning scripted series on the network that hasn’t had a renewal formally announced. Reportedly, the show will indeed be returning for Season 3, making it very likely that ABC will officially announce its renewal in the near future.

It’s also looking like ABC will be ordering at least one of two pilots to series in addition to renewing every current scripted show. This includes The Rookie: North, a new spinoff of The Rookie. The pilot, which follows a middle-aged rookie cop working in a more rural area, was well-received by ABC execs. Meanwhile, the odds of another comedy pilot, Do You Want Kids?, are said to be at 50-50; the series follows a married couple in two universes, with the two having a baby in one, and are childless in the other.

Other shows on ABC which have already been given formal renewals for new seasons this fall include Abbott ElementaryGrey’s AnatomyHigh Potential9-1-19-1-1: NashvilleThe Rookie, and Will Trent.

Additionally, the new procedural R.J. Decker, starring Scott Speedman as an ex-con working as a private investigator, is likely to be picked up for a second season. The network’s other new comedy, the Scrubs revival series, is similarly looking at a likely renewal. Though this leaves a lot to look forward to on the network when it comes to the 2026-27 television season, it’s speculated that ABC might reduce episode counts for some of these shows in order to stay within budget.

In any case, the probable return of Shifting Gears will come as good news for fans of the series. The sitcom, which debuted in early 2025, stars Tim Allen as a widower who runs an auto restoration shop while Kat Dennings co-stars as his estranged daughter, who moves in with her two children (Maxwell Simkins, Barrett Margolis). The series also stars Seann William Scott and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell.

Shifting Gears has also had some notable guest stars, and this is likely to be a continued trend with Season 3. The second season saw Allen reunite with multiple co-stars from Home Improvement, including Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning. Other guests for Season 2 included Gabriel Iglesias, Lori Greiner, and Pamela Adlon.

Shifting Gears is streaming on Hulu with Season 3 expected to arrive this fall.
