The reason behind why Jenna Elfman joins Shifting Gears despite her initial hesitations
In the ever-evolving landscape of television, reunions between sitcom legends often feel like a calculated play for nostalgia. However, for Jenna Elfman, her decision to join the ABC sitcom Shifting Gears alongside Tim Allen was less about business and more about a personal “coming home.”
While fans were thrilled to see the Dharma & Greg star return to her multi-cam roots, Elfman recently opened up about the initial hesitations she felt before signing on to the project.
The Hesitation: Walking Away from Comedy
Before Shifting Gears, Jenna Elfman had spent five intense seasons on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, a gritty, post-apocalyptic drama that required a vastly different emotional range than her sitcom past. After years of survivalist storylines and heavy drama, Elfman admitted she wasn’t sure if she wanted to return to the world of comedy at all.

“I didn’t know if I was ever going to come do comedy again,” Elfman revealed in a recent interview with TheWrap. The high stakes and technical difficulty of multi-cam sitcoms—which require performing in front of a live audience—can be daunting for actors who have stepped away from the format for over a decade.
The “Game-Changer” Factors
Despite her reservations, three key elements convinced Elfman to step back into the spotlight as Eve Drake, a spirited choreographer who frequently butts heads with Tim Allen’s character, Matt Parker.
1. The Power of “Home”
For Elfman, the set of Shifting Gears felt like a family reunion. The showrunner, Michelle Nader, was a writer on Dharma & Greg during its third season. “We got on so well even then,” Elfman shared. “So when she called me about this role, it just felt right.”
Additionally, the cast featured familiar faces: she had previously worked with Daryl “Chill” Mitchell on Fear the Walking Dead, and she had a long-standing personal friendship with Tim Allen. Elfman and Allen had starred together in the 2009 film The Six Wives of Henry Lefay, and their families have been close for nearly two decades.

2. The Multi-Dimensional “Eve Drake”
Elfman wasn’t interested in playing a “one-note” character. During early discussions, she and Nader focused on creating a “strong woman with all the colors.” As a business owner and choreographer, Eve is confident, occupies space, and refuses to apologize for her opinions—a dynamic that allowed Elfman to bring depth to a genre often criticized for being formulaic.
3. Her Own Family
Interestingly, the decision was also influenced by her life as a mother. Elfman noted that her teenage sons have become fans of classic sitcoms. “We’re sitting down at night and watching classic, iconic sitcoms together,” she said. The desire to contribute to the kind of “genuine laugh and relief” that she sees her own family experiencing was a major draw.
A Sitcom “Reinvention”
Since debuting in Season 1, Episode 7, Elfman’s chemistry with Tim Allen has been a highlight for viewers. Their “unfriendly sparks” have turned into one of the show’s most compelling dynamics, proving that Elfman’s return to ABC was exactly what the series—and the actress herself—needed.
As the show heads toward its third season, it’s clear that Jenna Elfman has found her rhythm again, trading the zombies of the apocalypse for the high-energy banter of the dance studio.
