Michael Bublé is opening up about the impact his family has had on his career.

The singer, whom many consider synonymous with the holiday season, is known for his memorable songs and for being a coach on The Voice. Thanks to the incredible success of his 2011 album Christmas, people worldwide wait for this time of the year to listen to him belt out some of the most iconic Christmas songs.

Even though his legacy is closely tied to all things holiday, Michael spoke out about how he initially wasn’t too thrilled with that association. But as he shared with Willie Geist for Sunday Today on October 26, it took his oldest son Noah (with whom he shares with wife Luisana Lopilato) battling cancer to change his perspective on what people remember him for.

“I’ve always loved Christmas music, but there was a time, years ago now, where my manager used to get mad … It was like, they wanted me everywhere,” he shared in a clip posted on Instagram. “And then my son got diagnosed with cancer, and I don’t know why, but I had the clearest epiphany that day. I remember thinking, ‘Why did I ever worry about anything else?’ And from that day on, I never felt the same about it again. And I’ll be gone, man. Long gone. Weirdly, that’ll be the legacy.”

When fans realized that Michael gave a rare comment about Noah’s health journey, many went to the comments to commend him for how he balances his career with his home life.

“Nice story made me cry. He has his priorities straight,” one person wrote. “Things come into a clear perspective when your family comes first,” another agreed. “Unbelievable man!” a different follower added.

As some may remember, Michael and Luisana announced in November 2016 that Noah had been diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer called hepablastoma. At the time, Noah was three years old and Michael stepped back from his career amid chemotherapy and other treatment. In the spring of 2017, Noah was in remission, and Michael has spoken out in the past about how this affected his family (which includes sons Noah and Elias, along with daughters Vida and Cielo, with Luisana).

“What we went through was the worst possible thing that you could hear as a parent, and as maybe a human being,” he told Australia’s Today Show in November 2018. “I much rather would have it have been me. Many times I wish that it had been.”

“I remember closing my eyes and saying to myself, ‘If we get out of this, I’m going to live a different life, a better life,'” he added. “And I did. I made that promise to myself in like a moment. I want to be kinder. I want to be more empathetic. I don’t ever want to allow that ego and that false self to take over. I want to know how lucky I am.”
