The Voice will have in-house voting for the first time in Season 29.

The red chairs are back, the talent is electric, and the stakes have never been higher. However, as Season 29 of The Voice (subtitled “Battle of Champions”) unfolds in early 2026, fans are witnessing the most radical shift in the show’s history: the end of “America’s Vote” as we know it.

For the first time since the series premiered in 2011, the power to crown a winner has been taken out of the hands of the general public and placed into a specialized, in-house voting block.

The New Gatekeepers: Super Fans and Alumni

In past seasons, viewers at home would cast millions of votes via app, website, or social media. This season, due to a condensed filming schedule—partially influenced by NBC’s primetime NBA coverage—the show is moving away from traditional live broadcasts.

The Voice producers' big plans for next season have 'backfired' after series of setbacks with two coaches

Instead, the Semifinals (Top 9) and the Grand Finale (Top 4) will be decided by an in-studio audience consisting of:

Vetted “Super Fans”: Dedicated viewers with an extensive history of supporting the show.

Former Contestants: The Voice alumni who understand the technical nuances of a vocal performance.

Why the Change?

According to returning coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend, this shift is about returning to the show’s musical roots.

“It doesn’t sound or feel the same when you’re at home,” Adam Levine noted in a recent interview. “When you’re in the room, nothing replaces that. You feel the vibration, the breath, the raw emotion.”

By using an in-house panel, the show aims to eliminate “popularity contest” dynamics—where a contestant might win simply because they have a large social media following—and focus instead on who delivers the best live performance in the room.

The “Battle of Champions” Format

The voting change is just one piece of a high-octane season. To keep things competitive, Season 29 has introduced several new mechanics:

Feature
Description

Triple Turn Competition
Coaches compete to see who can get the most three-chair turns in the Blinds.

The Super Steal
A power that allows a coach to “trump” another coach’s steal attempt in the Battles.

All-Star Showdown
Coaches bring back legendary alumni (like Jordan Smith and Girl Named Tom) to compete for advantages.

In-House Voting
The winner is chosen by the studio audience of experts and super fans.

A Polarizing Shift

The Voice' Coaches Tease Season 29 Format Change and New Voting Details

While the coaches are excited about the “live feedback” aspect, the move has sparked debate among the fandom. Some viewers feel that removing the public vote takes away the “interactive magic” that made The Voice a household staple. Others argue that having former contestants judge the final rounds will finally guarantee that the most “technically gifted” singer wins the recording contract.

As the Battle Rounds continue this March, all eyes—and ears—are on the studio to see if this “In-House” experiment will create the next global superstar or if fans will demand their voting rights back for Season 30.
