Tim Allen’s New Comedy Series Hits Milestone Despite Future Uncertainty
Tim Allen isn’t ready to say goodbye to the world of sitcoms just yet, because comedy legend has wrapped filming on Season 2 of ABC’s Shifting Gears, marking a major milestone for the comedy as it prepares to return from its winter hiatus in January. Allen shared the news just ahead of the holidays, and his excitement about the show’s momentum was hard to miss. Standing next to a Shifting Gears poster in a post shared on X, he said:
“Wrapped second season. Love this crew, staff and fellow actors. Blessed to be doing a live audience show.”
Shifting Gears has had a slightly rocky road since its debut, but it’s far from a flop. The series premiered strong, pulling in 6.1 million viewers, before settling into more modest numbers by the Season 1 finale, which drew 3.8 million. On paper, that drop raised some eyebrows. According to Nielsen’s Live+35 metrics, the show actually reached more than 10 million total viewers, a performance strong enough to convince ABC to greenlight a second season despite the linear decline. In layman’s terms, in the new era of TV, delayed and streaming viewership still counts — and Shifting Gears clearly found an audience beyond same-day numbers.
Is Shifting Gears Getting a Season 3?

That said, the future beyond Season 2 is still very much up in the air. While production has wrapped, ABC hasn’t announced whether the show will return for a third season. Season 2’s fall finale marked Episode 8 of a planned 13-episode run, meaning network executives may need to make a call sooner rather than later. But this isn’t new for Allen, because he’s been here before, on two separate occasions. Home Improvement was the kind of sitcom that defined a generation while Last Man Standing proved he could still anchor a long-running hit decades later, and launch a career in the shape of breakout star Kaitlyn Dever, and that’s the kind of track record that means, no matter what, you shouldn’t even underestimate a titan of the comedy world like him.
For now, fans can take comfort in the fact that Season 2 is finished, on track, and clearly something Allen is proud of. Whether the show gets to keep building momentum beyond that remains to be seen.
