From “Hook-Shot” Shelton to “The Voice”: Blake Shelton’s Hilarious Late-Night Showdown
When Blake Shelton sits down on a late-night talk show sofa, viewers know they aren’t getting a standard, scripted promotional interview. Instead, they’re getting a masterclass in comedic timing, self-deprecation, and the kind of “Southern charm” that involves calling the host a “jackass” on national television.
In a recent appearance following the conclusion of his 15-show tour in Philadelphia, the country superstar and The Voice coach reminded everyone why he remains one of the most relatable figures in entertainment.

The “15-Show” Tour and the Philly Crowd
Shelton kicked off the interview by discussing his recent tour wrap-up on St. Patrick’s Day in Philadelphia. Despite being the #1 name in country music, Shelton joked about his light touring schedule.
The “Voice” Factor: Shelton admitted that his commitments to The Voice have significantly cut into his ability to tour like he used to.
The Philly Experience: Even though Shelton is a die-hard Arizona Cardinals fan, he braved the notoriously tough Philadelphia crowd shortly after their Super Bowl victory. Despite his attempts to win them over, he joked that the crowd’s response was a unanimous: “Boo, you suck!”
Pre-Show Rituals: No “Me-Me-Me” Here
The host playfully prodded Shelton about his backstage rituals, even demonstrating some exaggerated vocal warmups ($♪♪ Oom, la, la-la-la ♪♪$). Shelton, however, was quick to shut down the idea of him doing scales in his dressing room.
“I have a drink before the show. That’s what I do to warm up. I have a vodka and a Sprite Zero, or a diet 7-Up. Something citrusy.”
The Legend of “Hook-Shot” Shelton
The highlight of the night came when the host produced a “blackmail” photo of a 16-year-old Shelton. Long before the Grammys and the red carpets, Blake was a teenager in Oklahoma who gave himself the nickname “Hook-shot” Shelton.
While he admitted he never actually played for the high school team, he claimed the hook-shot was the perfect move because “that’s the one way you can shoot the ball and be running away at the same time.” To prove he still had “game,” Shelton successfully sank a hook-shot into a hoop brought out on stage—with a little “invisible” help from the host moving the basket.
Chaos on the Ranch: The Adam Levine Story
Shelton also shared a hilarious “behind-the-scenes” story involving his fellow The Voice coaches, Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine. During a New Year’s trip to his ranch in Oklahoma back in 2012, the group was pulled over by a deputy sheriff while using a designated driver.
The cultural clash was evident:
The Oklahomans (Blake & Kelly): Weren’t afraid to “rib” the officer about his uncool mustache, knowing they hadn’t done anything wrong.
The Los Angeleno (Adam): Was reportedly “convinced they were going to jail” and began pleading with Kelly to shut up as his nerves took over.
“I Lived It”
Between the laughs, the conversation turned to Shelton’s emotional track, “I Lived It.” The host claimed the song makes him cry, specifically mentioning the “Crisco” and “Yellow Jackets” lyrics that evoke a deep sense of nostalgia for a simpler time.
Shelton, ever the skeptic, jokingly searched for cue cards to see if the host actually knew the lyrics or was just “doing research.”
