A newly released sneak peek from The Voice Season 29, Episode 2 confirms that contestant Mike Steele earns a three-chair turn — followed by a standing ovation — during his Blind Audition.

In the preview clip, Steele performs Giveon’s “For Tonight,” prompting coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend to turn their chairs.

The moment escalates when all three rise to their feet after the performance, applauding as Steele’s family watches from backstage with host Carson Daly.

Levine is the first to press his red button, followed by Legend. Clarkson waits, keeping her eyes closed as Steele sings, before turning her chair later in the performance.

The preview ends before revealing which coach Steele ultimately chooses.

The Voice season 29 introduces Triple Turn Competition twist

The Voice Season 29, titled “Battle of Champions,” continues its Blind Auditions format in Episode 2.

In the sneak peek, Steele’s rendition of “For Tonight” draws immediate praise from the coaches once the chairs turn.

Clarkson tells Steele, “I love how your talking voice matches your singing voice.” Steele replies,

“I get that a lot.”

Legend highlights Steele’s vocal tone, saying,

“Interesting. I love your tone, there’s a richness in it.”

He also describes Steele’s baritone as “rare” and adds,

“I feel like we could have a lot of fun working together.”

Levine makes his pitch directly, telling Steele,

“I feel like you can do anything. I just want to be a part of it.”

Clarkson references her own career trajectory during her appeal.

“I was on a singing competition, and I sang Aretha Franklin almost every week, and then I released a pop-rock album. I am totally going to push you to do things that are outside of the box.”

During his introduction on The Voice, Steele shares that he performs music on the side but returned to school “to make a better life for my children.”

He explains that he previously worked as a teaching assistant and is currently studying music.

The three-chair turn in The Voice Season 29 carries additional strategic weight. According to NBC, once a contestant receives a three-chair turn during the Blind Auditions, the Triple Turn Competition begins. The network states,

“During the Blind Auditions, the coach with the most Artists on their team who received 3-Chair Turns will earn a special advantage to use later in the competition — the Super Steal.”

NBC further explains the process that follows the Blind Auditions on The Voice:

“In the Battles, the round after the Blind Auditions, teammates go head-to-head in competitive duets, after which their coach chooses one Artist to keep, releasing the other. That released Artist can then be ‘stolen’ by another coach (though coaches have a limited number of steals). If more than one Coach wants to steal that Artist, the Artist gets to pick their new coach.”

The Super Steal adds another layer. A coach who uses it secures their chosen artist regardless of competing interest from the other coaches. The advantage overrides the standard steal process.

The Voice Season 29 continues to feature Clarkson, Levine, and Legend among its coaching lineup, with Daly returning as host.

The format maintains the show’s hallmark structure: Blind Auditions, Battles, and Knockouts, culminating in live performance rounds.

Steele’s Blind Audition airs in full on March 2. The Voice broadcasts Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with episodes streaming the next day on Peacock.
