Why Adam Levine Broke Into Song & Sang “I Don’t Wanna Do It, I Quit!” on The Voice
The Voice Coach had some tough choices to make during the first night of Battles performances.
Adam Levine, an OG Coach on The Voice: Battle of Champions who has three wins to his name, was so distraught at having to send anyone from his team home during the first night of Battles that he broke into song about how much these choices were “gonna suck.”
How to Watch
Watch The Voice Mondays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock.
For Levine’s first Battle of the season, he paired up Hunter Jordan and Bay Simpson to sing “I’m The Problem” by Morgan Wallen. And as Levine explained, he struggled with the idea that he could only choose one to advance to the Knockouts.
“I did not want to pair Bay and Hunter, but I had to because it made too much sense,” Levine explained, noting that both singers were in the country/rock vein. “You want to put people together who you feel like will actually have a really great moment together.”
It makes sense that Levine would loathe to lose either of his country-adjacent boys, given how hard he worked to have the genre represented on his team. Jordan was the singer who inspired Levine to somersault onto the stage after he picked him over Coach Kelly Clarkson.
Simpson, on the other hand, only got a 1-Chair Turn, and it was at the last minute, so he went into his Battle round with a lot to prove.

Before Simpson and Jordan even took the stage, Levine told Clarkson and Coach John Legend that he’d need help choosing between them, and Legend agreed, “This is actually…a dilemma!”
Jordan, a consistent performer, was “a sure thing,” said Clarkson after they sang, but noted that Simpson stepped up his game and “was a surprise.”
Trying to stall, Levine told Daly he made up a little ditty about his dilemma. “I just wrote a new song. It’s called ‘This Is Gonna Suck! So Bad!'” Levine said in a sing-song voice. “I don’t wanna do it. I quit!”
Back on track, Levine told his Artists, “Bay, you have a tried and true authenticity about you that is really raw. The dude’s cool. Hunter, we all knew it from the jump. I don’t wanna let you down, you went with me.”
Host Carson Daly gently and jokingly prodded the rocker, “I’m just gonna ask you this and you can answer whenever. It’s literally part of the show and my job…” Finally, Levine relented, saying that Simpson won the Battle.
Without any Saves or Steals, Jordan headed home, but took the loss like a champ, telling Levine that he had no regrets in his choice of Coach.

Unfortunately, Levine’s torment was not over. Later that night, Moses G. and Alexia Jayy duetted The Commodores’ “Nightshift,” and once again, Levine was wracked with indecision.
“I don’t wanna do this, so I quit. Goodbye everybody, it’s been nice, I appreciate it,” he told Daly and the audience. Pressed, he continued, “There’s no loser here. No one loses this one.” But forced to choose one as the winner, Levine went with Jayy, telling cameras that her voice “makes me want to weep.”
“It’s so beautiful and emotional and raw and broken but also so strong and fortified, it’s like all of a things that a voice could possibly have, all in one voice,” Levine continued. And the best news was that this time, no one had to go home, as Legend stole Moses G.!
“Moses was incredible, he was just radiating positive vibes, good energy, star power,” Legend said in celebration. “I am so looking forward to working with Moses in the Knockouts.”
