NEED TO KNOW

Sarah Chalke recently appeared on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast
During the episode, the Scrubs actress recalled taking over the role of Becky Conner on Roseanne in 1993
The actress even recalled a surprising encounter with a fan who had very strong feelings about the casting change at the time

When Sarah Chalke stepped into an already‑beloved role of Becky Conner on the ‘90s sitcom Roseanne, she didn’t expect how strongly fans would react.

“I think the only reason that I was able to actually even go and do the job was because I was so naive, and I didn’t actually get it,” the Scrubs star, 49, told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on an episode of Dinner’s on Me released on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

“I mean, I got it a little bit. I didn’t really get it in the same way that I would now in terms of potentially the pressure cooker that that situation was, I think, I didn’t fully comprehend,” she added. “I think it’s the only reason I was actually able to even go and audition and be in that room and be present and have a conversation with them. I think I just was pretty young and naive.”

In 1993, Chalke replaced Lecy Goranson, who had originated the role but departed from the show after its fifth season to attend college. Her departure, however, left viewers deeply attached to her version of Becky, which she had played since the sitcom premiered in 1988. “There was for sure a lot of opinions,” Chalke revealed.

During the casting change in season 6, Chalke experienced passionate fan reaction firsthand while attending a Freedom Tibet rally with friends. A stranger approached her and made their opinion very clear. “They were like, ‘I like the first Becky way better,’ ” she said. “And I was like, ‘Okay, yeah. She was fantastic. I agree. She was great.”

The encounter, however, took an unexpected turn when the same fan returned to apologize, explaining they had “always wanted to yell at an actor.”

“I was like, ‘Oh, thank you for clarifying,’ ” Chalke remembered telling them. Although Goranson eventually returned to the role she had originated, Chalke’s portrayal of Becky continued through several episodes in the eighth and ninth seasons of Roseanne.

When the series was revived in 2018 and later evolved into The Conners, Chalke appeared in a different role, keeping her connection to the series alive.

Chalke later went on to gain widespread recognition on Scrubs, where she played fan-favorite Dr. Elliot Reid for nearly a decade. On Feb. 28, she will be returning to the beloved series in an upcoming revival, reuniting with original costars Zach Braff and Donald Faison.
