When he started dating the “Hollaback Girl” singer, he admitted he “didn’t know what [he] was signing up for” but was “all about signing up for it.” According to Scary Mommy, Blake shared a personal experience where his father had helped raise Blake’s half-brother Richie when he met his mother. “He took Richie on and raised him from the time he was 1 … and my brother never thought of my dad as anything other than his dad,” the singer said. Because of this, Blake understood how important the role was in being a stepfather.

“I’ve had step-parents,” Shelton said. “I think it’s, in some ways, harder, more difficult. I try to be careful about when to step back and be smart about when to step back and just talk, but no matter what, I’m always there if I’m needed.”

How Blake Shelton Felt About Becoming A Stepfather Later In Life

Blake Shelton has expressed how becoming a stepfather has changed his life, especially as he had no children with his previous partners. “I learned quickly, not because anything happened, but just, you know, reading the room, you’ve really got [to think], ‘I have to take a step back.’ When people say it’s not about you anymore when you have a kid… I think, if you’re doing it right, it’s not about you anymore. That’s true.”

He also made huge changes to his life to ensure that he prioritized his family, as he worried about “having regrets” about missing the “more important things in life.” The empathetic singer said, “This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again.”

“Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously. The kids see me as a very important person in their life,” he explained in a PEOPLE interview. “[When they ask,] ‘Why isn’t Blake here?’ I take that stuff to heart. I’ve made plenty of money, but you can’t buy time back. I don’t want any regrets.”

The singer knew the importance of having a good stepfather due to his own family situation. His own father started dating his mother when Blake’s older half-brother was a baby. “He took Richie on and raised him from the time he was 1 year old, and my brother never thought of my dad as anything other than his dad,” said Shelton. Sadly, his brother sadly passed away in 1990, aged 24, in a car accident.

The example that my dad set for me was that [child] was not even a consideration [in a romantic partnership]. You got three boys? Awesome! My dad did it. My dad raised me. I could do this. I didn’t know what I was signing up for, but I was all about signing up for it.

Blake also revealed that the kids have taught him as many life lessons as he has imparted to them. In December 2022, he told PEOPLE that the kids helped him realize he was more than “just a country singer or a goofy guy.”

Blake was previously married to country singer Miranda Lambert, but the pair did not have children. She is a stepmother to her husband, Brendan McLoughlin’s son, Landon.

Shelton called the feeling of step-parenting “a different kind of self-worth” because he is someone the boys rely on, and “that’s not a responsibility that I ever had and not something that I ever considered even being into.”
